Thank you to Clare Parnham for the following update:
The men’s first team, under the captaincy of Matt McCombe, have recently won back-to-back promotions in the Surrey Winters League. In consecutive years they have moved the club up from Division 5 West to Division 3.
Congratulations go to Harry, Krisnaa, Eliot, Dan, Finn, Greg, Angelo and Alex. The team played five matches against teams from Surbiton, Woking, Magdalen Park, Old College and Westside. They won three of these fixtures 4-0 and drew two of them, to end the season topping the group. It is particularly notable that, with the exception of Greg, who played in two of the five matches, all players who competed for Byfleet were aged between 14 and 17. This is encouraging as, with the young players improving every year, our men’s team can aim to emulate our women’s first team and try to reach the higher echelons of Surrey club competition.
We now have an exciting summer season about to start. The young players of Byfleet made an equal contribution last summer to Byfleet’s promotion from Division 5 West to Division 4 of the Surrey Summer League, so they will be hoping to repeat their winter success of gaining back-to-back promotions. Whilst the boys all compete regularly in tournaments, they don’t play a great deal of doubles, so playing for Byfleet gives them an excellent opportunity to improve their doubles game. With team tennis starting in April, they will also have the opportunity to represent their club in singles. So, it looks like the men’s first team is on the up!
