For the first year Byfleet Tennis Club ran events as part of the Dan Burden Trophy – a grade 3 LTA tournament which is based at Elstead. The Dan Burden Trophy is run in memory of a young Elstead coach who died aged 21 in a car crash. This is the fifth year the tournament has been held.
With the help of the Byfleet club and courts, the tournament was extended to encompass more events and entrants in 2018. Players came from all parts of the UK to compete with entrants from South Wales, Gloucestershire, Devon, Essex, Suffolk and Northampton.
Using the five artificial clay courts the 12 and under and 16 and under events, for both boys and girls, ran successfully over three days at Byfleet. The boys 12U had the largest draw of the tournament with 32 competitors, with 16 in the other three singles events held at Byfleet as well as excellent entries for the doubles.
Congratulations to our Byfleet Junior members who played in the events at both Byfleet and Elstead :
- Krisnaa Muhunthakamar, winning both the 16U and 18U singles and the 16U doubles, partnered by Finn Doyle
- Eliot Glaysher, runner up in the 18Usingles and winning the 18U doubles with partner Seb Holden
- Soto Katano and Matthew Bates, runner up in the 16U doubles
A number of Byfleet members helped to make the event a success, helping to court supervise and organise the event and minimise the disruption for members. With the support of the club it is hoped that this could become an annual event.
