Surrey League

Surrey Ladies 1st Team

The volume of team tennis, matches and team practices we have played this year has been one of the highest, this is also matched by the standard of competitive tennis with some 1st team players competing at national and county level as well as playing in division 1 of the Surrey league.

The summer league matches at times were tough, we will go down to division 2 but remain in division 1 for the winter.

Many thanks to all the players, who included Chrissie Runnicles, Yvonne Burrage, Elena Mileva, Anna Craigen, Martina Volkova, Jackie Nesbitt, Julia Blatchly, Vanessa Sage, Melissa Gordon, Stephanie Cockram, Louise Tierney and a very special thank you to Eloise Bancilhon, one of our young juniors who competed in the ladies team for the first time in October.

Louise Tierney (Captain)

Surrey Ladies 2nd Team

The Ladies 2nd team enjoyed a successful winter season, gaining promotion to division 3 for the 18/19 winter league.

Having already been promoted to division 3 for the summer, the team faced tough opposition in all their matches. As a result of bad weather (ironic in one of the hottest summers on record!) the team ended up playing their last two matches in September and needed to achieve at least a draw in their final match to avoid relegation. In a close fought match, the result was 2-2 against Shirley Park and we stayed in the division on the % sets won.

A well deserved thank you to the squad, who included Anna Craigen, Anna Yates, Vanessa Sage, Jackie Nesbitt, Stephanie Cockram, Martina Volkova, Betty Maitland, Jane Timmis, Pat Wire, Beth Hunt, Julia Blatchly and Jenny Cox. A special mention also to Vanessa Sage, who unfortunately suffered a serious knee injury in our July match. Wishing her a successful recovery and hoping to see her back on the court for next season.

Jenny Cox (Captain)

Surrey Ladies 3rd Team

The Ladies 3rd team had a very successful winter season narrowly gaining promotion to division 4; the team tied on points but won the division on the % sets won. In the summer, again all of the matches were close and hard fought, and we came 3rd in the division and so will remain in division 5.

Many thanks to all the following players who played; Lynn Wright, Debbie Ebbs, Michelle Cockram. Beatrice Henricot, Helen Keddie, Lyn Stirk, Barbara Awbery, Anna Yates, Betty Maitland, Sally Little and Sue Willoughby.

Sue Willoughby (Captain)

Surrey Ladies 4th Team

The Surrey League Ladies 4th team had a successful season this Summer finishing top of their division. This means next summer they will be moving up to Division 8. With this upgrade, all BLTC Surrey Ladies teams will be in the top eight divisions of the Surrey league. Well done BLTC Ladies!!

Patricia Wilson (Captain)

Surrey Ladies Grade A Knockout Cup Team

In the Grade A Knockout for Summer 2018, Byfleet reached the final which was to be played on 16th September. This was a fixed Surrey League match date so both sides agreed to rearrange to mid-October.

As the weather forecast was poor, we started early and played a short set format. However, it was impossible to finish and Byfleet were just ahead when everyone agreed that play should stop. Surrey LTA have declared the match a draw.

The main squad was – Yvonne, Chrissie, Elena and Lou, with Jackie and Anna filling in. The same squad were also successful in the Winter Cup.

Michelle Cockram (Captain)

Surrey Mens 1st Team

The first team won both their winter and summer divisions.

Matt McCombe (Captain)

Surrey Mens 2nd Team

The Mens 2nd team ended the winter 17/18 league in 2nd place in division 14 west and ended the summer league 3rd out of 6 teams in division 13 west. We were therefore promoted to division 13 west in the winter 18/19 league. The year has been slightly dogged by the lack of a stable team. However, with the addition of new junior team members, we are hoping to push for promotion to within closer reach of the 1st team.

Mark Knowles (Captain)

Surrey Mens 3rd Team

The Mens 3rd team won their division (15) in the summer league with an impressive record of 5 wins and 1 draw, with only a lost championship tie break in the last rubber in the final match denying them a perfect record. The squad was made up of a mix of new and established members, who all gelled together to enjoy several competitive matches.

Many thanks to Neil, David, Ben, Steve, Mark and Alastair for all being part of this season’s successful squad.

Alex Grigg (Captain)

Surrey Mens 4th Team

In their first summer season, the Mens 4th team finished runners up in division 18 west and will be promoted one division. The league was very tight; we won 9 out of 11 rubbers on championship tie breaks, the two we lost were to the division winners.

Alan Genzel (Captain)

Surrey Ladies Team Tennis

With over 20 players from Byfleet’s top 3 Surrey League teams keen to play the Team Tennis 4 singles/2 doubles format, we entered a 2nd team into the league. Our Team Tennis 1st team finished a creditable 3rd in the strong Surrey division 1 — one of their opposition was ranked 115 in the world only 5 years ago! The 2nd team started in division 4 and, due to a team withdrawing, only had 3 matches – they won them all so are on their way up to division 3 next year.

Many thanks to all the players who included Elena Mileva, Chrissie Runnicles, Yvonne Burrage, Martina Valkova, Julia Blatchly, Louise Tierney, Anna Craigen, Anna Yates, Pat Wire, Jackie Nesbitt, Jenny Cox, Michelle Cockram, Betty Maitland, Sue Willoughby, Bea Henricot and Jane Timmis.

Jane Timmis (Captain)

Surrey Mens Team Tennis 1st Team

Having achieved promotion the previous season, the Mens 1st team competed in division 3 of the Surrey Team Tennis competition (formerly known as AEGON Team Tennis). The season got off to a great start win a 5-1 win away at Surbiton. This was followed by a 4-2 home win against Woking 2nd team in front of decent home support from our members. With momentum building, we were then able to achieve a very comfortable 6-0 win away vs Foxhills, before also beating The Bourne Club at home by the same score. 4 wins from 4 matches put us joint leaders with St. George’s 2nd team, who had also won all their matches. This meant the title would be decided on the final day of the season in our match against St. George’s. The singles rubbers were shared so it all came down to the doubles matches. Unfortunately, we lost both of these, which meant St. George’s took first place leaving us as runners up.

A great effort from the team however, particularly as we had spent the previous few years in a lower division. The team consisted of the following players; Jamie Boden, Eliot Glaysher, James Morris, Daniel Abernethy, Finn Doyle, Axel Eichelmann, James Low, Mark Winton and Greg Read (captain). Thanks also to those members who came along to help and support us.

Greg Read (Captain)

Woking League

Woking Ladies A Team

This year’s performance was fantastic with a win over David Lloyd who eventually won the league. We came a close second overall. With a pool of 11 players to draw from we were able to field teams easily and our strength this season is thanks to the recent influx of new members, who have integrated superbly.

Tracey Wheeldon (Captain)

Woking Ladies B Team

Byfleet Ladies are good supporters of the Woking League, and it has been a privilege to captain the B team. Last summer playing in division 2, we finished mid table, so look forward to maintaining this next summer. We have now made a good start to the winter league in division 4 and shall be aiming for promotion in 2019!

Jean Scrivener (Captain)

Woking Ladies C Team

We came top of our division in the summer, even after giving a walkover for one match, so will be moving up a division next year. For the winter season, we somehow find ourselves in the same division as the B team so we are looking forward to getting thoroughly thrashed by them soon!

Anyone looking to start playing some competitive matches or coming down from higher teams and wanting more matches will be very warmly welcomed as many players in this team have lots of other commitments outside of tennis.

Rachel Whitehead (Captain)

Woking Mens A Team

We had our best season in years, finishing second to Woking A who have dominated the league in recent times (last season they scored 40 out of 40 points!). In our 10 games played, we won 7, drew 2 and lost just once which was to Woking A.

Those who featured (in appearance order): Anthony Marti, Neil Roberts, Ben Whitehead, Craig Sutherland, James Abernethy, Huw Town-Jones, Alex Grigg, Colin Boxer, Andy Murphy and Ben Nicholson. Fantastic achievement, well played all!

Huw Town-Jones (Captain)

Woking Mens C Team

A very challenging season in a tough division for us. Absolutely delighted that we managed to finish 3rd in the end. Well done team – thanks again for your support.

Clive Weston (Captain)

Woking Mixed A Team

We have had an exceptionally tough season playing in Division 1. We managed a couple of draws but found the opposition too good on the whole. As a result we will be going down to Division 2.

Siobhan Kennedy (Captain)

Woking Mixed B Team

The mixed B team had a good season and managed to finish unbeaten easily to finish top of our league.

Martin Barber (Captain)

LMT (Ladies Midweek Team) League

 LMT Level 1

The team had another enjoyable season last winter and finished second. With a large squad of 12, the aim is to ensure that everyone has as many games as possible. We have started well this season, winning our first two matches. Hopefully we will continue with these winning ways in our remaining games!

Jenny Cox (Captain)

 LMT Level 2

We had a super season only losing first place by 2 points. The standard of the teams we play is consistent and the matches are played in general in a friendly manner.

Rita Conlan (Captain)

LMT Level 3

Level 3 Ladies came equal 4th last season. We were not as strong as previously due to injuries and players returning to work. Hopefully we will be stronger in this year’s league.

Caroline Cockwill (Captain)

LMT Level 4

Our results last season were not as good as the previous year’s, when we had won the league. Two of our squad have moved to the Level 3 team and we now have new members.

Jane Read (Captain)

LMT Over 60s

Last year I captained the Over 60s mid week league. It’s a small league with only five teams. We came third in the competition, beaten only by St. Georges and Horsley Sports Club. With Foxhills and David Lloyd bringing up the rear.

We had a core of 9 players, Jean Porter, Patricia Wilson, Sue Lockwood, Hilary Thornhill, Judy Hill, Barbara Chapman, Mary Braddock, Susan Barwell and Eve Gunn.

Eve Gunn (Captain)

Seniors Tennis GB

Seniors Tennis GB Ladies Over 40s Team

As winners of the 2017 competition, we qualified for the European Seniors Club Championships finals in La Manga in September 2018. Unfortunately, however, due to other commitments, we were unable to take up our place.

Our team has had another successful campaign in this year’s National competition, narrowly losing to a very strong St Georges in the semi-finals.

The squad included Yvonne Burrage, Chrissie Runnicles, Lou Tierney, Jurate Hardy and Martina Volkova.

Yvonne Burrage (Captain)

Seniors Tennis GB Ladies Over 50s Team

We reached the quarter finals of the 2018 competition but lost a close match to Caversham Club, when we were unable to field our strongest team. Hopefully we will progress further in 2019 competition.

Jenny Cox (Captain)

Seniors Tennis GB Ladies Over 60s Team

As winners of the 2017 competition, we played in the European Seniors Club Championships in La Manga in September, winning all of our matches to become European Club Champions.

We have enjoyed another successful season in the 2018 National Club competition and became champions for the third consecutive year when we beat a strong Norwich team in the finals in Dudley on 16 November. La Manga 2019 here we come!

Congratulations to the team: Pat Wire, Debbie Ebbs, Jane Timmis and Jenny Cox, and a special thanks to Barbara Awbery and Betty Maitland who played a key role in helping us win some of the earlier rounds.

Jenny Cox (Captain)

Seniors Tennis GB Ladies Over 65s Team

We entered an Over 65 team in the National Competition for the first time this year and are delighted that we won through to the final and qualified for the European Inter Club Championships next year where we will be representing Byfleet LTC. We unfortunately lost to the Over 45 club in the final on 16 November but special thanks go to Jean Porter who agreed to play in the final as two members of the team were unavailable.

Congratulations to the team: Sally Little, Barbara Awbery, Lyn Stirk, Rosie Naunton- Morgan and Sue Willoughby
